If Life is Sacred
If life is sacred, save the child
Whose mother cannot pay the price
To bring a doctor’s care.
If life is sacred, save the child
Whose mother in a darkened room
Gives birth with none to share.
If life is sacred, save the child
Who has no books, no hope, no
smiles,
No dreams, no joys to dare.
If life is sacred, save the youth—
No place to go, no good to do—
Then save the adult whose despair
Has led to crime and trouble. Care
For all the wounded warriors who
Need hope, respect, and mercy
too.
And save the sick, the unforgiven,
Unemployed, the lost and hidden,
Those on death row waiting—Save
Their lives, or sacredness deny.
If life is sacred, why
Are we not saving sacred lives?

I don’t know what translation
is correct, but I do know I cannot impose my interpretation of God’s law on my
neighbor in the name of human law. And I know I am called to love my neighbor.
